About Owen Bruhn

I live with my family and pet dogs. My children are grown up and some have left home.  Just as I keep my client's information private, I do the same for my family.

As a child, I was sent to judo to toughen up. I wasn't tough enough and played with "softer" meditative- martial systems instead. In 1984, I was lucky to learn Stillness Meditation from Dr Ainslie Meares (1910-1986). Meares was internationally recognised for his work in hypnosis and then transitioned to teaching only Stillness Meditation, as he found it most effective. I am grateful for his teaching as it set me onto my path. I am also grateful to many other teachers who I have walked with since then.

My Honours Degree was about fats and arterial disease. At that time, science said sugar was healthy and fat killed. Fat might have been career killing. So, I shifted into ergonomics & occupational hygiene. There is more to Ergonomics than "safe lifting", chairs and funny looking keyboards. It involves making systems better fit human requirements. Improving fit means better quality of working and personal life, few injuries and less disease. Occupational hygienists assess doses (eg physical, chemical, psychological, mechanical & biological factors). Then, sensibly reducing the dose to stop a harmful response.

In my OHS days, I met people from all walks of life doing every type of work imaginable. I had to communicate in all sorts of difficult circumstances. My Stillness Meditation practice was invaluable. My OHS experience proved invaluable when my interest in Stillness Meditation was reinvigorated in 2010 after an injury. While completing Stillness Meditation Teacher training, I re-read all of Meares' many books and articles.  I felt obliged then and still do now to make his method available to people who find it of interest. Some people said "write it down" and I wrote Ainslie Meares on Meditation which helped do that- and includes some of Meares' writings. The next book, Still Mind Sound Body, was about thriving rather than just surviving.

I wanted to teach for a few years more before writing about Meares' teaching method. But, the pandemic shut down meditation teaching. I re-read all of Meares' written works and put his teaching protocol in one book, Ainslie Meares on Teaching Meditation.  Writing that book helped me upgrade my own Stillness Meditation practice and my teaching skill.

Some people are ready for self care. Others seek therapy or healing. A few are "not ready" or not a good match and I assist them find someone who can help.  I bring these principles to my studio. My offerings help reduce anxiety, tension, fear and pain. These experiences can also energise, facilitate self discovery, personal growth and harmony.

I continue to practice Stillness Meditation daily myself. I suggest it to others, for self discovery, growth and self care. I offer Stillness Meditation Touch Therapy, in the Meares' tradition, 1:1 and in small classes from time to time. Small helps keep quality high.

I also offer Usui Reiki and Therapeutic Touch to those who feel an affinity for one of those paths.  Both Reiki and Therapeutic Touch share common roots from which Stillness Meditation also independently evolved.

Whether it be Stillness Meditation Touch Therapy, Reiki or Therapeutic Touch - it is only doing that counts. Only experiencing counts. Those who take one step down the path will find the next step easier when they choose to take it.
