Dr Ainslie Meares MD, DPM was an eminent Australian psychiatrist, internationally recognised medical hypnotist, meditation teacher, healer and poet. Initially, Meares made major contributions to hypnosis that were internationally recognised. Later, he transitioned from hypnosis to only teaching Stillness Meditation as he found that most effective. In doing so Meares also introduced mind-body medicine to the west in the 1950s-1960s. Stillness Meditation is a form of homeostasis - the ability to self adjust the mind to eliminate stress so we can cope better. Some people refer to it as self healing of body, mind and spirit. It is a natural function. When correctly taught and correctly practiced it can be learnt by everyone. You already have the ability, it is a matter of reawakening or re-learning that which already lies dormant within you.
Over time it is hoped to put more information about Dr Meares as a subsection on this site.
Owen's book, Dr Ainslie Meares on Stillness Meditation, includes a biography about Dr Meares and his work. It is recommended reading for those learning Stillness Meditation.

Note:
- Always know the cause before treating symptoms with meditation, especially if pain is involved. See your medical doctor, if needed. This applies to hypnosis and other methods too.
- Stillness Meditation is self help, complementary to medical treatment.
- Individual response can vary.
For example, lets assume that we have 100 people who all appear to experience the same hypothetical condition or problem coping. They all try meditative experience or treatment:
90 people are helped a lot and
10 are helped much less.
You can vary the numbers or percentages but neither teacher\therapist nor the individual knows if they are in the 90 (lots of help) or 10 (less help) category, it could be 99 to 1, 95 to 1, 60 to 40 or whatever. The way to find out is via giving it a try. Then actual true response is known in hindsight.
- Correct daily practice enhances individual response.
Those who closely follow instructions, attend class and practice daily do better.
For readers who want to learn the method independently or alongside tuition. This is the best place to start.

The FAQ - Facilitated Meditative Experience - Supine Stillness Meditation Experience page has a bit more information. Or, email or ask Owen about this transition pathway.
